Reading Assessments

Understand what is going on and what your child needs next.

A reading assessment helps clarify your child’s strengths, current challenges, and possible next steps.
Your child is capable. When reading remains unexpectedly difficult, an assessment can help explain why their skills may not yet reflect what they understand and are able to do.

Get a Clearer Picture of Your Child’s Reading.

A reading assessment shows where your child is now, including areas of strength and foundational skills that may need support. It can help identify challenges with decoding, spelling, fluency, word recognition, and other skills involved in accurate, confident reading.

A Blosser reading assessment is not a formal dyslexia diagnosis. It can identify patterns of reading difficulty that may suggest that a comprehensive evaluation by a licensed psychologist would be a helpful next step. Whether or not your child has a diagnosis, Blosser can provide individualized, one-to-one structured literacy tutoring based on their current reading needs.

Whether or not your child has a diagnosis, a reading assessment can help you understand what may be getting in the way and what kind of support may be most helpful next.

Why It Helps

A reading assessment can:

  • Show your child’s current reading strengths and skill gaps
  • Identify challenges with decoding, spelling, fluency, and word recognition
  • Clarify which foundational skills may need direct instruction
  • Help explain why reading remains difficult despite your child’s effort and ability
  • Give your family a clearer starting point for intervention
  • Help determine whether Orton-Gillingham, Launch Literacy, or another next step may be appropriate

The purpose is not to define your child by what they cannot yet do. It is to understand the reading barrier more clearly so their strengths have a better opportunity to emerge.

What Happens Next

After the assessment, we meet with you to explain the results in clear, practical language. We discuss what the assessment shows about your child’s strengths, current reading skills, and areas that may need support.

You will have an opportunity to ask questions and understand how the different pieces of your child’s reading profile fit together.

From there, we help you think through possible next steps. These may include Orton-Gillingham tutoring, intensive Launch Literacy instruction, additional evaluation, school-based support, or another recommendation based on your child’s needs.

The assessment gives your family more than scores. It provides a clearer path forward.

The First Step Is Understanding

You may already know that your child is bright, curious, and capable. A reading assessment can help explain why reading has not developed as expected and identify the kind of instruction that may help.

The assessment is appropriate whether or not your child has a formal diagnosis.

A conversation with our Program Director will help determine whether a Blosser reading assessment is the appropriate first step.
